Is my report automatically shared with my insurer or the Wildfire Prepared Home program?
No. We do not share any data with insurers or the Wildfire Prepared Home program without your permission.
Why Madronus?
Since 2021, we have provided thousands of wildfire consultations, and our customer reviews speak for themselves. Our wildfire mitigation specialists undergo over 40 hours of classroom and field training, and stay current with monthly training sessions. We live in the communities we serve and are passionate about helping property owners protect their homes and businesses.
Does Madronus get kickbacks from contractors and recommend things I don't need?
No. You are our customer. We do not receive referral fees or "kickbacks" from contractors based on the treatments we recommend.
All of our services are clearly itemized so you never question whether we're recommending something you don't need. We save most customers 5-10x what they spend on a consultation.
How is my home structure footprint measured?
Structure footprints are measured by calculating the two dimensional top down area of the primary home and any attached or detached structures or decks within 30 feet or whatever distance is required by your insurer (see example). This often varies significantly from the advertised or permitted home size due to garages and other features that are typically excluded from a home's advertised habitable space.
What do I need to prepare?
Before your initial consultation, please make sure your specialist can walk around your home to examine vents, windows, and other exterior features.
It's generally better not to begin doing work until after your consultation. The rules are technical and complex, and it's easy to spend money and time on things that aren't required or end up having to be re-done.
What is home hardening and wildfire mitigation?
Home hardening refers to modifying your home to resist ignition during a wildfire better. It’s like armor for a home. This can include using fire-resistant roofing materials, installing ember-resistant vents, ensuring that the bottom six inches of the home’s siding is noncombustible, or installing 1/8-inch metal mesh screening under decks.
Wildfire mitigation is a broader term that includes home hardening as well as actions you take around your property to reduce wildfire risk. This can involve creating defensible space by clearing vegetation, keeping gutters and roofs free of debris, and maintaining safe distances between trees and structures.
Do I have to be present for an in-person consultation or final inspection?
No. We recommend that you or your representative be present, but it is not required. If you are unable to be present, please mention this when scheduling.
How is this different from a defensible space inspection by the fire department?
In most jurisdictions, defensible space inspections typically cover landscaping and trees around your structure out to 100 feet and do not necessarily incorporate the latest scientific guidelines. The Wildfire Prepared Home evaluation covers the home itself and landscaping and accessory structures within 30 feet of the primary home.
Can I be fined for code violations because I get a consultation?
No. We do not conduct code enforcement nor share findings with local authorities. Our job is to help you protect your home from wildfires and identify options to mitigate risks.
Are there incentives or financing available?
Yes. Your report will identify any incentives available in your area to help offset the cost of any work you may need to do. Financing options are also available.
